Newcastle United striker Joselu was absent from the match day squad against Crystal Palace due to injury, according to The Chronicle.

The newspaper claims that a knock was the reason why the 29-year-old was nowhere to be seen as the Magpies fell to a 1-0 defeat against the Eagles.

The former Stoke City man has played just nine minutes of football this calendar year as his Newcastle career continues to lurch towards an inevitable end.

There is no mention of what type of setback the Spaniard suffered or any time frame for his return to first team action.

OPINION

It says it all about how poorly regarded Joselu is on Tyneside that his absence on Saturday essentially came and went without much notice. Nobody seemed to really pick up on the fact that he wasn’t in the match day squad, which is evidence of how majorly he has disappointed since swapping the bet365 Stadium for St James’ Park in 2017. He is pretty much irrelevant to the Magpies’ cause these days, with his lack of action this calendar year hammering that fact home. Joselu simply isn’t Newcastle standard, nor is he good enough for the Premier League in general. He contributes nothing the majority of the time. He’s not a goalscorer, nor is he an incredibly hard worker. He doesn’t provide much in terms of build-up play, nor does he dominate in the air and win flick ons like his teammate Salomon Rondon. It would almost be a surprise to see him feature at all for Newcastle down the stretch this season, that’s how bad he’s been.
