Bruno Genesio has confirmed that he will leave Lyon at the end of the season, and that surely opens the door for Newcastle United to approach the French manager in the summer.

According to RMC Sport, Newcastle have concrete in interest in hiring the 52-year-old as a potential replacement for Rafa Benitez at the end of the season.

Benitez’s current contract expires in a matter of weeks, and with each passing day without a proper update, it seems more and more likely that he will be on his way out of St James’ Park.

Genesio has at least offered Lyon supporters some clarity on his future, after being quoted by the Ligue 1 club’s official Twitter account as saying that he will leave them once the season is over.

“I had a very long discussion this morning with my President to tell him not to continue next year,” he said.

Genesio’s impeding exit is surely music to the ears of Newcastle owner Mike Ashley because the Chronicle has reported that he would be a fan of the Frenchman, who has promoted youth during his spell in charge of Lyon.

It is understood that Genesio is brilliant at working with younger players, something which matches what Ashley wants to implement in the North-East.

And now with him confirming that he will be available at the end of the season, Ashley has a chance to strike and hire a manager who is reportedly interested in succeeding Benitez at St James’ Park.

Newcastle fans would definitely prefer to see Benitez stay, but if the Spaniard does move on at the end of his contract, Genesio could definitely be his replacement judging by this latest news.
