Newcastle United starlet Sean Longstaff is on the road to recovery after suffering knee ligament damage in March’s fixture against West Ham according to journalist Ciaran Kelly.

The Chronicle writer wrote on his personal twitter account that the youngster was walking around the training ground and all was on track in his rehabilitation, with the homegrown talent currently in Canada.

Longstaff, 21, had become a mainstay in Rafa Benitez’ plans and was making his 11th consecutive start after making his debut in December for the Magpies.

The battling midfielder was forced off at half time in the game against West Ham and was confirmed to likely miss the rest of the season after scans on his knee.

OPINION

This will come as great news to Newcastle fans as Sean Longstaff’s impact was nothing short of miraculous for the Magpies. The academy product made an instant impact for Benitez and scored on his second start for the club. Although results have not faltered during Longstaff’s injury, Newcastle have certainly missed his presence in the middle of the park. Consistency has gone out of the window and neither Mo Diame or Ki Sung-Yueng have been able to nail down a starting place in the side. With Diame’s future under threat at the club, the opportunity is there for Longstaff to take once his rehabilitation is complete and he will no doubt be a starter at the club for many years to come. With Premier League survival confirmed and a solid pre-season under his belt, Longstaff will be one of the first names on the team sheet in the next Premier League campaign.
