Xhaka doubtful for Newcastle clash

A few months ago, Newcastle United would have been written off against Arsenal before a ball had even been kicked.

The Magpies started the season dreadfully, and the Gunners came out of the blocks flying, but the tables have turned recently, and while Unai Emery’s side are starting to pick up speed again after a period of poor form, the Toon Army look like a different side entirely.

No longer relegation fodder, they look to be safe, for another season at least, but Monday night’s clash with Arsenal will still be a big ask for Rafa Benitez’s team.

That task might have been made a little easier, however, by the suggestion that Arsenal could be without Granit Xhaka.

The Swiss international was forced off during his country’s 3-3 draw with Denmark on Tuesday night, casting doubts over his availability for the Premier League meeting.

According to Football.London, the 26-year-old ace damaged an adductor during the match, and could be a doubt for the Gunners.

That will come as a blow for Unai Emery, who has utilised Xhaka as a deep-lying playmaker for large parts of this season, playing the Swiss 32 times in all competitions this season.

From the Magpies’ point of view, however, Xhaka’s absence could be a timely boost.

This match has the feeling of one where the Toon Army could nick something against the odds, and they will be encouraged by knowing that a key member of Arsenal’s spine is missing.

Newcastle must be ready to capitalise on this stroke of luck.
