Newcastle United midfielder Mo Diame could be at the heart of a scramble for his services, according to the Daily Star.

The Senegalese international’s current deal on Tyneside expires this summer, although he could be in line for an extension if he starts three more matches this season.

The precarious nature of his future with the Magpies, however, has alerted a number of clubs to his potential availability, with the report naming Premier League sides Crystal Palace and Brighton, as well as Turkish giants Besiktas and Galatasaray as potential suitors.

OPINION

Diame’s future at Newcastle is on a knife’s edge at the moment. On the one had, he has been a valued member of Rafa Benitez’s squad for some time now, and it’s hard to see that Spaniard simply allowing such a loyal player walk away from the club so easily. On the other, it is clear that the 31-year-old has fallen down the pecking order at St. James’ Park, and now he’s the wrong side of 30, it could be a lot harder for him to regain that first team berth that he will feel he deserves. Undoubtedly, the midfielder still has a lot to offer a club, but whether that club will be Newcastle or somewhere different remains to be seen. He isn’t always the most popular or fashionable of players, but if this contract wrangle is the prelude to a departure, then there will be plenty on Tyneside who will miss the powerful Senegalese international.
