Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer delivered a memorable reaction on Twitter as he expressed his happiness at his old team’s come-from-behind victory over Everton on Saturday.

Second half strikes from Salomon Rondon and Ayoze Perez (twice) secured a 3-2 win for the Magpies after Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison had put the visitors ahead in the first half at St James’ Park.

Shearer also noted the atmosphere during the match as he hadn’t heard St James Park like that for a while.

It was an unbelievable comeback from Rafael Benitez’s side and it’s safe to say that Shearer was over the moon: “I’ve haven’t heard St James’ Park like that for a while,” he wrote on his personal Twitter account.

“What a comeback. TOON TOON ARMY,” he finished.

OPINION

Having watched the game you can see why Shearer was so overjoyed by this result. The Magpies looked completely out of their depth at half time. They were well beaten by Everton in the opening period and couldn’t seem to get to grips with the game. One particularly bad decision from the referee didn’t help matters, of course. However, it was a completely different story after the break. Newcastle were so much better after half time it beggars belief. Ayoze Perez looked like a different player, while Salomon Rondon came alive. The introduction of midfielder Jonjo Shelvey was also key in turning the game around. What was crucial, though, was the support of the fans and, as Shearer says, the atmosphere at St James’ Park was incredible. The supporters really got behind the players and you could see the difference it made. It buoyed the players on and had them believing a comeback was possible and, as it turned out, it was.
