Newcastle United will offer Championship side Sheffield Wednesday the chance to sign on-loan winger Rolando Aarons this summer, according to The Chronicle.

The newspaper claims that Steve Bruce’s side, who are currently in the thick of a push for the play off places, will have the option to sign Aarons permanently no matter what division they are playing in next season.

The 23-year-old has quickly become a key player for the Owls since joining on a temporary basis in January, bagging a goal and an assist in nine appearances thus far.

Any sale would bring an end to what has been a troubled Magpies career for a player who was once thought to be a future St James’ Park star.

OPINION

This seems like the ideal solution for all parties involved this summer. Aarons clearly has no future at Newcastle, whether that’s under Rafael Benitez or anyone else, and so a permanent change of scenery would surely be beneficial for him. The club, likewise, would hardly object to him leaving. Wednesday, it seems, are delighted with the progress he’s made since arriving in January and so they would likely be keen on bringing him in on a permanent deal come the end of the season. Bruce has breathed new life into the young man’s career and he seems to be enjoying his football again at last. There really is no reason for him to return to Tyneside this summer; it’s far better for everyone if he stays at Hillsborough. Obviously The Chronicle’s report doesn’t explicitly state that the Owls would be interested in bringing Aarons in full time, but you’d have to think that if he maintains his current form then he’s a shoe-in to be wearing blue and white next campaign.
