Newcastle United should sign Huddersfield Town midfielder Aaron Mooy in the summer, according to Chronicle journalist Mark Douglas.

The reporter claimed via his personal Twitter account on Wednesday morning that Rafa Benitez has been keen on Mooy, 28, in the past and has mooted the idea of the Magpies boss trying to sign the Australia international this year.

It is understood that Mooy “won’t stick around” at Huddersfield if they are relegated from the Premier League, but with seven games to play, the Yorkshire club is 17 points from safety and could mathematically have their relegation confirmed this weekend.

OPINION

Mooy would definitely be a good signing for Newcastle in the summer. He has been quite impressive for the Terriers despite their terrible season in the Premier League and he could be an affordable addition to the Magpies midfield if players leave. Jonjo Shelvey and Isaac Hayden have both been linked with leaving St James’ Park this year while Mohamed Diame is approaching the end of his contract. As Douglas says, if a couple of them leave then Mooy would be a good addition and perhaps a bit of an upgrade on some fairly inconsistent players. The £50,000-a-week [Spotrac] Huddersfield ace is a good passer of the ball, he is versatile enough to cover a number of midfield roles and has an eye for goal when he gets the opportunity to play in a more advanced position. Rafa Benitez’s future at St James’ Park is not yet clear, but whoever is in charge come the summer, they should definitely try to sign the ex-Manchester City midfielder.
