OPINION
Miguel Almiron may have been tearing it up in the Premier League since joining Newcastle United in January, but his return to the USA could have gone a bit better on Wednesday when he was sent off in Paraguay’s 4-2 defeat to Mexico. Almiron came off the bench in the international friendly at Levi’s Stadium in San Francisco, but was shown a straight red card just minutes later for a terrible challenge on Jose Juan Vazquez. Almiron’s studs raked down the back of the Mexican’s calf, and you cannot blame the referee for sending him off, and you cannot blame a number of fans on Twitter from tearing the midfielder to shreds either. There was no need for that challenge and maybe the occasion got to Almiron’s head a bit. He was meant to be one of the stars of the show while playing against his former Atalanta manager Tata Martino, who is now in charge of Mexico. Hopefully he doesn’t do this for Newcastle any time soon.
