It’s becoming evermore widely accepted that Jack Colback doesn’t have a future at Newcastle United.

The midfielder has been deemed surplus to requirements by Rafa Benitez, and has spent this season out on loan at Championship side Nottingham Forest while a plethora of midfield options have made a name for themselves back on Tyneside.

It would be a shock if he didn’t leave the club at this point, but his latest comments on his relationship with Forest boss Martin O’Neill could be the clearest indicator yet of where his future lies.

The 29-year-old has been singing the manager’s praises to the Nottingham Post, and you get the impression that Colback would happily keep playing for the Irishman.

He said: “Our relationship is good, I had a good experience with him at Sunderland.

“When he came in there, we really hit the ground running and I have some good memories from that.

“With Martin, what you see is what you get. He is straight to the point.”

Colback’s departure from St. James’ Park has always felt as if it rested on being able to find a club who were willing to take the midfielder off the Magpies’ hands, and by the sounds of it, Forest could be that club.

Not only is Colback seemingly happy there, but his relationship with O’Neill would suggest that he has a future at the club, and for a player approaching 30 in October, first team football must be a real priority for him.

The local lad might have had his heart set on a dream move to Tyneside when he jumped ship from Sunderland back in 2014, but things haven’t transpired as he will have hoped, and these latest comments are the most blatant yet that his future lies away from St. James’ Park.
