Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has heaped praise over Magpies stars DeAndre Yedlin and Sean Longstaff for their performances against Huddersfield Town on Saturday.

Both players produced terrific displays as Rafael Benitez’s side ran out comfortable 2-0 winners at St James’ Park, and both men did enough to make Shearer’s Team of the Week.

The Geordie great had this to say about Yedlin on the Premier League’s website: “[He] Didn’t have to defend too much but looked very good going forward and had a hand in both Newcastle goals.”

And Longstaff: “MOM. So impressive again and ran the middle of the park,” he finished.

OPINION

Shearer is spot on in his assessment of both players’ performances on Saturday. Yedlin has had a difficult season so far, but he roared back to form against Huddersfield. He was tremendous. Like Shearer said, he didn’t have too much to do from a defensive standpoint, but he was very strong offensively. He bombed forward throughout and was very much involved in the Magpies’ attacks. Benitez’s side looked a lot better going forward on Saturday and Yedlin was a big part of that. Not much more can be said about Longstaff that hasn’t already been mentioned. He is a phenomenal young footballer and his step up to first team football has been incredible to witness. He has made that central midfield his own and is now nigh on undroppable for Benitez. He was fantastic again against the Terriers and deserves this acclaim from someone like Shearer. His future is extremely bright, that’s for sure.
