Perez was a revelation against Huddersfield

There were a number of hugely encouraging performances for Newcastle United against Huddersfield Town on Saturday, but perhaps the most surprising display came courtesy of attacker Ayoze Perez.

The Spaniard has been much-maligned this season by seemingly everyone but his manager. He has too often looked lacklustre and lifeless during games, but has continued to be selected on a regular basis by Rafael Benitez.

However, it was a completely different story against the Terriers. Perez was one of the key men in the Magpies’ 2-0 victory at St James’ Park, as he rampaged forward with relentless intensity.

He grabbed the crucial second goal just after the break, capitalising on the advantage that Salomon Rondon had given Newcastle in the first half. That was important for the Spaniard, because he hasn’t scored often enough this campaign. He has bags of talent but he hasn’t been able to put it all together consistently enough.

Saturday was a step in the right direction and, indeed, he looked transformed compared to how he appeared earlier this term. Benitez will have been smiling from ear to ear watching him, with his faith in the 25-year-old firmly rewarded.

Perhaps it was the introduction to the team of the excellent Miguel Almiron that had this effect on Perez. The Paraguayan was absolutely sensational on his full debut for the club, and he’s seemingly brought out the best in both Perez and Rondon.

That will have been immensely pleasing for the Magpies boss, with the Spaniard having received a fair load of criticism for his so-called negative tactics this season.

But with Almiron on board, Rondon roaring and, particularly, Perez purring, Newcastle look like they’ll be going from strength to strength down the stretch.
