Newcastle United have held talks with clubs such as Juventus and Benfica in their search for January loan signings, according to the Chronicle.

The newspaper report that manager Rafa Benitez is desperately seeking a European loan before the transfer window shuts, with the club having been in contact with clubs in Italy, Spain and Portugal.

The Chronicle claim that Benitez is seeking an additional three players this month, with a striker, a winger and a left-back all prioritised.

OPINION

It is no secret that Benitez and Newcastle have been looking to the European loan market this month, with the club already at the limit of two domestic loans in Salomon Rondon and Kenedy. Benitez has long viewed loan deals from the continent as one of the best ways of strengthening this month, with the Spaniard aware that significant funds were not forthcoming from owner Mike Ashley. There is an abundance of untapped talent waiting for a chance in Europe, and Newcastle will be hoping to exploit that. The risk in going to Europe is that players may take time to settle in to life in Newcastle and to Premier League football, but that is a risk which the club are going to have to take – they don’t really have any choice. All they can hope for is that any new signings commit themselves fully to the cause and make an impact at some point during the run-in.
