Newcastle United have agreed terms with Atlanta United playmaker Miguel Almiron, according to AJC

The Atlanta-based newspaper report that a source close to the player has confirmed that terms were agreed on Tuesday and the 24-year-old is currently jetting into Newcastle for a medical.

AJC claim that the financial terms of the deal are not yet known, but Atlanta were previously demanding £23million for the Paraguay international.

OPINION

Wow. This is huge. It had previously looked as though a Newcastle deal for Almiron was dead in the water, with the Magpies unwilling to increase their initial offer for the Paraguayan playmaker. That offer was reportedly around the £16million mark, with the Magpies thought to be at least £5million short of the MLS side’s valuation. It was never expected that Newcastle would ever up their offer by that much, so it is not really clear what has happened to force this breakthrough. This is not like its coming from a dodgy source either – AJC are a reputable newspaper based in Atlanta, where Almiron has been playing. It is yet to be seen just how accurate this report is, but it does look like a deal may have been revived in the last few hours. If they do manage to wrap it up then this would be a massive deal for Newcastle and manager Rafa Benitez, who has been targeting Almiron for several months now.
