Newcastle United are one of four Premier League clubs interested in Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge, according to the Sun.

The newspaper’s transfer blog [17/1, 12.23pm] has reported that the Magpies are keen on the unfavoured Reds forward, along with the likes of West Ham, Everton and Southampton.

The update adds that the forward – who has scored a total of 77 Premier League goals throughout his career – looks like he will exit Anfield soon, with MLS side New York City also in the running to secure his signature in the final six months of his deal.

OPINION

Wow, what a signing this would be if Newcastle were able to secure the services of Sturridge. Despite the fact that he is unfavoured by Jurgen Klopp this season – he has made 18 outings, the majority coming from the bench – he would be just what the Magpies need at the moment. However, he is on £120,000-a-week [Spotrac] at Anfield, and it is highly unlikely that the club will be able to afford these wages any time soon. Mike Ashley is hardly going to provide such funds for a player playing second fiddle at his current club with such high earnings, as he has proved in the past that he is not notorious for sanctioning big moves. It looks like Newcastle could miss out, especially with the likes of West Ham and Everton lurking. The Hammers would be able to afford his wages and this is the one advantage that they have over their rivals. United should look elsewhere, no matter how good a signing Sturridge would be.
