OPINION

Newcastle United boss Rafa Benitez has not had much to sing about in the January transfer market, but he can be pleased with his work in the summer as he signed Fabian Schar for just £3million.

The Switzerland international had long been linked with a move to the Premier League, and the Magpies were the club to finally make that happen as he made the switch from Deportivo La Coruna.

Schar has had to bide his time at St. James’ Park so far, with Benitez using him sparingly at times due to the wealth of options he has at his disposal at centre-back.

In recent weeks however the 27-year-old has come to the fore, and his match-winning performance on Saturday in a 3-0 win over Cardiff really announced his arrival to the rest of the Premier League.

Schar set Newcastle on their way to the win with one of the best goals you will see from a centre-back as he brought the ball out from his own half to beat several players and curl a low finish past the goalkeeper with his left foot.

The 27-year-old then doubled his tally and his side’s lead with a header, before Ayoze Perez rounded off the win in injury-time.

Not only did Schar score twice, but he also helped the Magpies to register a valuable clean sheet, their first in five Premier League games.

The 6’1″ Swiss enforcer [Transfermarkt] may have played a bit-part role for the Toon so far this season, but after such a performance, allied with his displays in recent weeks, Schar is surely undroppable for Benitez at the moment.
