Newcastle United are in the race alongside Crystal Palace for Chelsea attacker Tammy Abraham if he is to be sold in the January transfer window, according to the Northern Echo.

The regional newspaper claim that the Magpies are ready to fight Palace for the 6ft 3in tall forward (Source: Transfermarkt) with Rafa Benitez being willing to push the club’s hierarchy to act by making formal contact with their counterparts at Stamford Bridge.

The Northern Echo report that Benitez regards Abraham as one of the brightest young talents in England and is determined to improve the Magpies’ attacking options in January so will even appeal to Mike Ashley about a potential deal.

OPINION

Abraham is currently in red-hot form for Aston Villa, where he is currently on loan, as he has scored an impressive 12 goals in 16 Championship appearances. The 21-year-old seems to have strength and power and could be ideal at St James Park, the only issue is he hasn’t exactly proven himself in the Premier League. Abraham has managed to score only five goals in 33 outings in England’s top-flight, with the majority of his appearances being for Swansea City, and you have to wonder if he is able to deliver the goals the Magpies need. Yet given that Benitez is a long-term admirer of the attacker and he has never really steered the Magpies too far wrong, maybe Abraham will be a revelation if recruited. According to the Northern Echo’s report Crystal Palace have already expressed their interest to Chelsea in the promising forward and could be willing to spend in the region of £10million.  Given that £10million isn’t too extravagant of a price tag, it’s easy to imagine the Magpies pursuing Abraham as he could fit into their likely plans not to splurge too much cash.
