You can sort of see where the Newcastle United fans are coming from here, but this was just a typical Mohamed Diame performance really. He’s been having the sort of games he had in the Magpies’ 1-0 win over Huddersfield Town on Saturday all season long. He puts himself about and he’s certainly energetic, he just doesn’t have that much technical ability. He gives the ball away far too often and doesn’t really contribute when Rafael Benitez’s side have possession. He is a decent defensive presence, but he’s far from elite as a holding midfield player either. It’s difficult because he clearly works hard and tries his best for the Newcastle cause, but he’s simply not good enough to be a weekly starter at this level. He showed that once again on Saturday with a fairly insipid performance against the Terriers. It wasn’t a horrendous display, he just failed to contribute much at all. Newcastle fans are becoming used to that now.
