Newcastle United have offered attacker Elias Sorensen a new three-year contract with Rafa Benitez keen to keep him at the club, according to The Sun.

The national newspaper claim that the Magpies have tabled an offer which would see the 19-year-old earn £1,500-a-week, but they have so far failed to agree terms with the teen due to him wanting a deal worth in the region of £2,500-a-week.

The Sun report that Sorensen, who has been in red-hot form this season by scoring 18 goals for the U-23s, is seen as one of the club’s best academy prospects.

It also believed that why Benitez wants to secure the player’s future, the Magpies are currently deciding whether to let the player leave on loan in January as a number of clubs are keen on his services.

OPINION

Sorensen has been in such great form for the U-23s this season that he is now known by a lot of Magpies supporters. It’s no surprise that the Magpies are looking to secure his long-term future at this time as there no doubt several clubs are keeping tabs on him if it emerges he is unhappy at St James Park. While it’s not promising that Sorensen is yet to agree terms despite the Magpies trying to tie him down, it is good to hear that Benitez is keen to have him at the club. It shows that the Spanish manager is more than aware of the teen’s talents and that it won’t be too long before he is perhaps handed a first-team opportunity. While this chance most likely will occur next season in the EFL or FA Cup, it’s still good to hear Benitez is keeping an eye on the club’s youth talents. Hopefully the Magpies sort the in-form player’s contract out shortly and loan him out in January as you feel playing senior football will really aid his development. As it’s one thing scoring goals for the U-23s but a whole another ball game when being asked to deliver the goods for a senior side.
