Ayoze Perez shared that Mike Dean told him that he believed the Newcastle United attacker’s nose started to bleed during the clash with Wolves due to being hit in the face with the ball.

The 25-year-old believed he should have been awarded a penalty during the Magpies’ 2-1 defeat to Wolves on Sunday as it appeared that Wolves defender Willy Boly caught the player with his elbow.

Yet despite needed to receive treatment the referee didn’t deem the coming together as a foul and since told Perez that he thought the ball had caused him to hit the deck.

‘I don’t know what we have to do to get a penalty,” said the attacker on Sky Sports Premier League (18:14, December 9) as transcribed by Chronicle reporter Mark Douglas via his personal Twitter account.

The guy elbowed me really hard straight in my nose but the referee said it was the ball that hit me not the elbow even though I was bleeding.”

OPINION

The Magpies clearly should feel hard done by when it comes to referee decisions not going in their favour against Wolves. DeAndre Yedlin was clumsy during the incident that led to his red card but it seemed harsh that he was shown red rather than yellow after he brought down Diogo Jota. Then clearly following that, Perez should have been awarded a penalty and Boly probably should have been sent for an early bath. While the Wolves defender didn’t mean to catch the Magpies attacker in the face with his arm, his elbow was in an unnatural position at the time of the incident and that’s reckless. Yet Dean didn’t deem the incident a foul, let alone a red card situation and the Magpies ended up going onto lose the game 2-1. Based on Perez’s quotes, the 26-year-old didn’t seem overly pleased with what Dean had to say about the incident and it’s likely fans won’t either.
