Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley will add any transfer spend in January to the asking price he wants for the club, according to the Chronicle.

The newspaper claims that Ashley is committed to giving manager Rafael Benitez money to spend in the winter transfer window but that any expenditure will up the cost of any sale.

The Sports Direct tycoon has been actively trying to sell the Magpies for the past month or so, however this update may put potential deals in jeopardy.

Newcastle supporters will be eager to see a resolution found and this report will be concerning news for the faithful Toon Army.

OPINION

This is a case of a positive short term development potentially harming a much-needed long term resolution. It is a good thing in and of itself that Benitez will receive funds next month, but if it negatively affects a potential sale then it’s really a bad thing for the club. You’d think that Newcastle will need some fresh faces to ensure they’re playing Premier League football again next campaign, but that may come at a big cost. Newcastle fans want Ashley out of the club more than anything so perhaps they shouldn’t be too disturbed if there’s not much activity on Tyneside next month. If the club’s frugality in January results in Ashley’s departure then that’s probably a bargain most Magpies fans would be happy to strike. Whether that’s what will happen remains to be seen because Benitez will obviously be pushing for transfer funds. This is an interesting one and we’ll have to to wait and see how it plays out.
