A section of Newcastle United fans have taken to Twitter to express their delight over the display of defender Federico Fernandez in the win over Watford on Saturday.
Substitute Ayoze Perez netted the only goal of the game in the 1-0 victory at St James’ Park to claim all three points for the Magpies in what was their first win of the season.
However it was the display of Fernandez which caught the eye, with many United supporters more than pleased with the performance of the 6ft 3in [Transfermarkt] ace, with some comments including “man of the match”, “outstanding” and “buy of the season”.
COMMENTARY
It is not surprising in the slightest to see these Newcastle fans wax lyrical over Fernandez in this way – he has been superb in the centre of the defence lately. Partnered with Fabian Schar – who came on for Jamaal Lascelles at half time – he was incredibly solid, and did not seem too fazed about the onslaught of the Watford attack after the goal. Whether he will keep his place in the team when Florian Lejeune finally returns remains to be seen, but at the moment, Rafa Benitez can rest easy knowing that he has found himself a real gem. He has adapted to life in the Premier League admirably well, and there is no doubt that he will be a pivtotal player for the Magpies this season. With Fernandez in the team, Newcastle will not be letting in too many goals – and for that, the fans can be extremely thankful.
