Newcastle United are now likely to initiate talks with West Bromwich Albion over permanently signing Salomon Rondon in January, according to the Northern Echo.

The regional newspaper claim that there is a strong chance of the Magpies discussing a deal for the 6ft 1in tall forward (Source: Transfermarkt) in the next transfer window after club owner Mike Ashley had witnessed him first hand.

The Northern Echo report that even though Ashley is opposed to signing players approaching their 30s and that he was unwilling to pay £16.5million for his services in the summer, the positive impact Rondon has made in his last two games could soften his stance.

OPINION

Rondon is 29-years-old and would cost an amount that would more than likely see the Magpies have to break their current transfer record. However it is about time that record was shattered and given Rondon’s recent form, he might be the player worth splashing the cash on. The 29-year-old ran the show in his last outing against Bournemouth as he scored twice to ensure Rafa Benitez’s team won the game 2-1. If Rondon’s form was continue to, and see him be amongst the goals, then it would seem foolish if the Magpies didn’t invest in his services. This is even the case when you consider that the Northern Echo’s report suggests the permanent sale of Dwight Gayle to the Baggies would be part of the discussions. Gayle has been in prolific form in the Championship and has always worked hard for the Magpies, but it’s clear they need a higher quality forward to rely upon in the long-term.
