Newcastle United could reignite their interest in Southampton left-back Matt Targett in the January transfer window, according to the Chronicle.

The regional newspaper report that the Magpies saw a deadline day loan bid fall short for the 23-year-old flyer in the summer of 2017, with Targett embarking on a successful loan spell at Fulham since then.

The Chronicle claim that Newcastle could revisit their interest in Targett in January with Rafa Benitez in need of another left-back and the young defender currently on the fringes at the south coast club.

OPINION

This would be an interesting move if Newcastle were to reignite their hunt for Targett, with the youngster having been so out of favour at Southampton this season. The 23-year-old has made just four appearances in all competitions, with just two of those coming in the Premier League, and will obviously be keen to earn regular first-team football. That lack of playing time however means that this move is a bit of a risk for the Magpies, who would be signing a player likely to need time to get up to speed. That being said, Targett is a dynamic left-back who would bring a new dimension to that position, while also having Premier League experience. It is not known whether the Magpies would pursue a permanent or loan deal, but considering the fact that the two teams are so close to each other in the table, it would likely have to be the former.
