Newcastle United’s on-loan striker Dwight Gayle does not have a buyout clause in his contract with West Bromwich Albion, according to the Chronicle.

The newspaper claims that the door remains open for the in-form 28-year-old to return to St James’ Park next year, with the club insisting that there be no buyout clause in his loan deal.

Gayle is focusing on trying to help the Baggies return to the Premier League at the first time of asking, but is said to be open to resuming his Magpies career after the current season ends.

The Englishman scored an audacious back-heel in West Brom’s 4-1 win over Leeds United on Saturday, bringing his goal tally for the season to nine.

OPINION

This is terrific news for Newcastle. Gayle was sent to the Hawthorns this summer because Rafael Benitez desperately wanted Salomon Rondon, not because the Spaniard was looking to get rid of Gayle. The frontman has shown what he can do this campaign with a terrific start to life at the Hawthorns, and he’s been tearing the Championship apart. He’s always been able to do that, to be fair, but he hasn’t always cut the mustard at Premier League level. Still, when someone is in form you don’t want to surrender them to another team, especially one that could be your direct rival next term. Gayle is a natural goalscorer, something which you can’t necessarily say about any of Newcastle’s other attackers. You do get the sense that it would be a mistake to let him go, so Magpies fans will be pleased that there’s no buyout clause in his Baggies contract.
