Newcastle United defender Jamaal Lascelles is in contention to face Bournemouth his weekend, according to Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie.

The reporter – who covers the North East of England – revealed via his personal Twitter account that the first teamer returned to training on Tuesday after being hauled off for Fabian Schar in the 1-0 win over Watford on Saturday.

Lascelles is set to be given the all-clear to face the Cherries at the weekend which will no doubt be a boost to boss Rafa Benitez.

OPINION

Many Newcastle fans will be happy to find out that Lascelles is in contention to face Bournemouth at the weekend, but it actually remains to be seen whether he will actually feature. His replacement on Saturday – summer signing Fabian Schar – delivered a breakout performance, so Benitez has been left with a serious selection headache going into this match. However, this should be viewed as a positive thing – the fact that Benitez has many quality defenders to choose from should not be talked down. Lascelles has not been the greatest recently so he will have to be wary over whether he will be dropped for this match, but him being available no doubt boosts United’s hopes of a second consecutive win. The team will be full of confidence for this clash, as it is a game that they are more than capable of getting points in – they will just have to show the same grit and determination that saw them to victory last weekend.
