You can completely understand why the Newcastle United supporters were so enamoured by Matt Ritchie’s first half display against Burnley on Monday night. The Scotland international was terrific in the opening period against Sean Dyche’s side. The former Bournemouth man was operating in an unfamiliar left wing back role in a back five. However, Ritchie performed exceedingly well, defending resolutely and contributing well in the offensive side of the game as well. It was his pinpoint cross that allowed Ciaran Clark to flick home the Magpies’ second goal. Ritchie has always had a wand of a left foot and that was demonstrated with the team’s second goal. It was important that Newcastle doubled their lead because 1-0 is always a precarious scoreline when you’re not a prolific team like the Magpies. Ritchie was key in Rafael Benitez’s team doubling their advantage and the Newcastle fans were rightfully delighted with him.
