Newcastle United striker Salomon Rondon has been included in Danny Mills’ Premier League Team of the Week.

The Venezuelan international grabbed two goals as the Magpies secured a shock 2-1 victory over high-flying Bournemouth at St James’ Park on Saturday.

The West Bromwich Albion loanee showed exactly why Rafael Benitez fought so hard to bring him to Tyneside this summer with a virtuoso display.

And Mills was certainly impressed: “Salomon Rondon got a couple of goals that secured a vital win for Newcastle, so he has to go in,” he wrote on the Sky Sports website.

OPINION

This was the Rondon that everyone in Newcastle was hoping for when the club brought him in this summer. The 29-year-old showed in his three seasons with West Brom that on his day he can be a nightmare for Premier League defenders and that’s what we saw on Saturday. The Bournemouth defenders simply couldn’t cope with him and he propelled his team to victory with a trademark performance. He took both his goals extremely well but he also bullied the visiting centre halves and won everything in the air. He fully deserves his place in Mills’ Team of the Week because he was superb at St James’ Park. With Dwight Gayle impressing for the Baggies it’s important that Rondon does the same to avoid Newcastle fans’ thinking they got the short end of the stick. Displays like this will certainly help in that regard, and everyone on Tyneside will be hoping the powerful striker can keep up this level of form.
