Newcastle United boss Rafa Benitez has revealed that he plans to stay at the club after his contract expires at the end of the season.

United recorded their third consecutive victory in the Premier League, registering yet another 2-1 win, this time over Burnley on Monday night – however, it was Benitez’ future which was the topic of conversation following the result.

The Spaniard admits that he is happy in England – despite not being allowed the appropriate funds in the summer transfer window – and has insisted that he wants to stay after enjoying his spells with the likes of Liverpool.

“When we talk about my future and what might happen we’re talking about the future of Newcastle United, not Rafa Benitez,” he told Sky Sports, as quoted by the Chronicle.

“In the end we sign players, I don’t take them home with me. They stay at Newcastle United, so it’s a question of wait and see what we can do in January. Now we need to enjoy it.

“I am happy in England and with the fans behind me. I have had three spells in England with great fans. The Liverpool fans are amazing and the Newcastle fans are too.”

OPINION

Mike Ashley is incredibly lucky to have a manager like Rafa Benitez on board, especially with his vast amount of knowledge and expertise on the game. This is why it would be particularly relieving for fans to hear these types of words come from Benitez’ lips, as there was no doubt a part of them that were thinking that he would leave at the end of the season, especially if they did not start winning. However, with three wins on the bounce, Benitez could not be happier, and nor could the supporters. This message from the manager shows that he is dedicated to making a success of Newcastle, even if that is defined by avoiding relegation this year – and that is something the fans should hold most dear. Benitez is here to stay for the long haul by the looks of it, and with him remaining on board, the likelihood of Newcastle going down are very slim indeed.
