Newcastle United transfer target Miguel Almiron wants to join either the Magpies or Premier League rivals West Ham, according to El Intransigente.

The Argentinian outlet claims that the two mid-table Premier League sides would be Almiron’s choice ahead of Arsenal or Tottenham, because he would be assured of regular football with them.

However, they also state that Atlanta United want £23.5million for the winger, an amount which would shatter Newcastle’s existing transfer record.

All four of the aforementioned teams are said to have made offers to the Paraguay international’s representatives, but the Magpies are the most interested party.

OPINION

This is an exciting update for Newcastle fans. It’s been clear for some time that Rafael Benitez’s side are interested in Almiron, but it’s good to hear that the player’s interest is mutual. Clearly the Paraguayan has his head screwed on correctly. He knows that he wouldn’t be a regular starter for the Gunners or Spurs, and he is taking a big picture look at his career. It appears that he is prioritising playing time over the money and prestige that a big club offers him, which is not something you see every day. Newcastle seem like they’re trying to elbow ahead of the other teams in the queue for Almiron, and now they know that he wants to play for them as well. The only problem for the Magpies is the £23.5million price tag attached to the player. That’s a sum of money that Mike Ashley has never been close to playing for a player, and there’s no reason to think that’s going to change for Almiron, so we’ll have to wait and see what happens here.
