Cardiff City manager Neil Warnock defended Rafa Benitez following Newcastle United losing to Brighton 1-0 at St James Park on Saturday.

The Bluebirds boss shared that there couldn’t be much wrong at the Magpies if they had 20 odd shots against the Seagulls and claimed it was too early to write anyone off, including Benitez, just yet.

Warnock also claimed that he believes Benitez wouldn’t walk away from the Magpies whatever happens as he alluded to it not being in the Spanish manager’s nature.

“I just think sometimes as manager, you can only do so much, you can train, sort your tactics and get everything ready,” said Warnock on talkSPORT (Monday October 22nd 8:14am).

“We (Cardiff) played Burnley a few weeks ago and we lost the game 2-1, due to two breakaways because we defended poorly.

“They had 20 odd shots against Brighton so they’re not doing too much wrong if they did have that many as I didn’t see the game.

“You’ve got to leave it to your players, the manager can only do so much y’know and that’s the one thing about Rafa, he won’t call it a day.

“He’ll keep going come what may and it’s an amazing place, I wouldn’t write anyone off down there yet as I think it’s too early.”

OPINION

Warnock and Benitez haven’t always got along in the media by any means but it seems the Cardiff City boss wasn’t going to join the bandwagon trying to put pressure on the Magpies boss. There no denying that Newcastle United have had a terrible start to the season as after not winning across any competition so far, it’s hard to be optimistic about the future. However Benitez previously proven what he is capable of doing in the St James Park dugout and it’s ridiculously that people are starting to question him. The Spanish manager doesn’t get every decision right by any means but after facing the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City, a poor start was always on the cards. While performances against Leicester City and Cardiff should have been better, it’s still early in the season. If the Magpies string three results together shortly then suddenly people will be backtracking and hailing Benitez for his managerial genius.
