Newcastle United do not have much to smile about at the moment, but there is one thing that could turn their frowns upside down.

That is the slow decline of Manchester United, who they take on in the Premier League this weekend.

The Red Devils have not had the best of times recently after a string of lacklustre results, but the 3-1 loss to West Ham United on Saturday must have been the icing on the cake for them.

For their fans, things could not get much worse – which is why Newcastle need to make the most of the direction that Jose Mourinho’s men are heading in.

Ex-Magpies’ defender Robbie Elliott took to his personal Twitter account on Wednesday to urge his former club to take advantage of their opponent’s “lack of confidence and cohesion,” and has said what Rafael Benitez must be telling his players in the pre-match team talk.

United must heed Elliott, as there could not be a better time for Newcastle to go out and get the win that the team and the fans are so desperately after at the moment.

If the likes of Brighton, Wolverhampton Wanderers and West Ham can take points off Manchester United, then there is no reason Newcastle cannot – but they need to take this oppportunity by the scruff of the neck, or else they will be doomed to fail.

Everything that could be going wrong at a club is happening at Old Trafford right now – and Newcastle must seek to heap further misery on them by snatching a shock victory.

Making the most of a team while they are low is important, and the players need to recognise this and up their game to ensure they take away all three points.

In doing so, they may just kickstart their season – and their luck will definitely start to turn around.

Many will not be predicting a win for the Magpies at the weekend, but one thing is for sure – Manchester United are not the team that everybody used to fear.
