John Motson shared that he thought at least a few Newcastle United fans might turn on Rafa Benitez around Christmas time if his side are in the bottom three.

The famous commentator shared he couldn’t help but think that Magpies supporters would question their club’s manager if they continued to struggle and found themselves in the relegation zone at the end of the year.

Motson, while sharing this concerns, revealed that he thought Manchester United would be able to scramble together a 1-0 win over the Magpies when they host them on Saturday at Old Trafford.

“This will be gruelling and defensive and Rafa will put up the shutters and Mourinho will be muttering away,” said Motson on talkSPORT (Friday October 5, 22:29).

“I just think, I’m gonna give Manchester United the benefit of the doubt, a 1-0 scramble win and then we will see what the international break brings for Mourinho and his future and all the rest of it.

“I read an article this morning about how everyone excuses Benitez anything at Newcastle, he can’t do anything wrong, even if their in the bottom three.

“I just wonder how long that will last, I know Ashley has not done this and not done that but if Newcastle are in the bottom three at Christmas aren’t a few of the fans going to say hang on a minute, y’know are we getting our full desserts here from what…anyway 1-0 Man United.”

OPINION

Motson really seems to be pessimistic anytime he talks about the Magpies and it’s clear that he isn’t backing them for success anytime soon. The commentator hardly sounds enthralled by the idea of the Magpies playing Manchester United and seems to take a dig at both sides’ managers in the process. While Motson doesn’t envision the Magpies getting heavily beaten courtesy of Man United, it’s still disappointing that he is backing them to lose. Benitez’s team should be believing in themselves to get a result against Man United as there seems to be trouble behind the scenes at Old Trafford. While it isn’t all rainbows and sunshine at St James Park, the off-field disappointed with the Magpies doesn’t seem to directly involve members of the first-team which is not the case at Man United. Motson may have painted an awful picture when looking ahead to Saturday’s game but it certainly will be an intriguing clash even if the most exciting football isn’t on show.
