The Newcastle United players will hold clear-the-air talks amongst themselves on the training pitch this week, according to the Mail.

The newspaper reports that Magpies captain Jamaal Lascelles will lead the talks as the players try to work out where they’ve gone wrong at the start of the season.

The squad members will be encouraged to give their opinion on how the team can improve, after stern words were shared in the dressing room following Saturday’s 2-0 defeat to Leicester City.

Newcastle are yet to win a Premier League game this season, and the club look like they’ll be in a relegation fight again this campaign.

OPINION

It’s encouraging for Newcastle supporters that there is news coming out this week about steps being taken to resolve the issues that have plagued the club so far this season. Evidently something needs to change at St James’ Park this season and it’s good to see the players taking steps to try and fix the situation. The squad haven’t been good enough this year, that’s for sure, but at least they’re trying to find a way out of their current miserable run of form. More creativity and attacking thrust is needed, and you wonder whether any of the players will take issue with manager Rafael Benitez’s negative tactics in their meetings, but the players need to buck up their ideas as well. They need to be honest with themselves and realise that they haven’t been good enough this term and that’s that. If they do that then they may be able to cultivate more of a team spirit and find a way to improve their Premier League struggles.
