Some Newcastle United fans heaped praise on defender Federico Fernandez for his performance during the 2-1 defeat to Arsenal on Saturday.
The 29-year-old centre-back, who joined the Magpies in the summer from Swansea City, played the full game against the Gunners and even grabbed an assist after playing in a perfect cross for Ciaran Clark to turn home.
One Magpies fan tweeted that the defender was the only player to submit a positive performance with the rest of his teammates putting in poor displays.
While another claimed that Fernandez looked really classy during his latest outing and that the Magpies had got him at a snip after purchasing him from the Swans for £6million (Source: BBC Sport).

Fernandez denies Aubumenyang his breakthrough. Perfectly executed tackle! He’s been top notch so far. #NUFC

There hasn’t been any real final ball by Arsenal in this match, and together with some great recovery tackles from Fernandez, #NUFC have looked comfortable today defensively

Fernandez is a terrific pickup for #nufc. Between the two central defenders in today plus recovering Lejeune and Schaar, that’s one position no January help is needed.

Fernandez on the wing did more than our actual wingers! #nufc

Lots of very poor performances and several simply not good enough – only positive was Fernandez for me #nufc

Fernandez is better than Lascelles.

OPINION
Fernandez deserves plaudits for his display against Arsenal as he looked solid at the back and looked capable of playing in some decent crosses if needed. The centre-back consistently put his body on the line in order to block the Gunners having shots on target and if he was missing on Saturday then the scoreline would have been worse from a Magpies perspective. While some of these Magpies supporters are particularly impressed with Fernandez’s latest display due to others being woeful around him, it shouldn’t undermine how talented he clearly is. Also while a section of Magpies’ fans were just please to see good performance, Fernandez’s attitude is what stood-out. Several players appear to crumble once going a goal behind but that wasn’t the case with the 29-year-old. Even when the Magpies went two goals behind, he was still determined to get something from Saturday’s game and that should be praised. Hopefully his teammates match his latest performance in the near future.
