Some Newcastle United fans pessimistically reacted to Rafa Benitez’s remarks on the club’s transfer strategy after he shared he was waiting to see what budget he would have in January.

The Magpies manager in his press conference ahead of Saturday’s game against Crystal Palace spoke about the club’s current plans for the January transfer window as he shared he had spoken to the head recruitment on Friday morning.

“I was talking with the head of recruitment this morning,” stated Benitez as quoted by the Chronicle (13:40).

“We have an idea for the next window, & now we just need to see if we have any money, always we have to be optimistic, but also realistic.

One Magpies supporter simply tweeted eat, sleep, rave, repeat in order to imply it was the same old story while another shared they thought the club wouldn’t sign anyone in the winter and it would be the final nail in Benitez’s coffin.

OPINION

It’s perfectly normal that Benitez wouldn’t know his January transfer budget so fans perhaps shouldn’t fear the worst at this stage. If the Magpies makes similar comments closer to the window opening then perhaps supporters should then start sounding the alarm bells as that would be a huge red flag. While a couple of fans claimed it would be the end of Benitez’s time at St James Park, perhaps they should save their worry until that ends up being the case otherwise they will not be happy for at least a few months. The Spanish manager still hasn’t signed a new contract to commit his future to the club and until that happens, every little negative comment or poor result is going to result in fans panicking that they’re about to lose him. While this section of Magpies supporters have taken Benitez’s remarks on the January transfer window in the worst possible way, maybe they should focus on the positive that discussions behind the scenes have at least taken place become about recruiting new players.
