Newcastle United had a scout in attendance when Benfica took on Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Wednesday, according to the game’s official list of scouts.

Tom Kundert, who is the Portugal correspondent for World Soccer Magazine, tweeted a picture via his personal account of the official list of clubs that had scouts watching the clash between the two European giants.

The journalist didn’t share any more details about the players who were potentially being watched but the list did reveal that the Magpies’ scout had a lot of company from other Premier League sides watching the game.

OPINION

It seems the Magpies are already making progress when it comes to finding players to sign in January and that is a positive. However what is really positive is that the Magpies are conducting transfer missions that involve high-profile clubs such as Benfica and Bayern Munich as both teams are packed with fantastic talent. While it’s unknown who the Magpies’ scout was focusing their attention on, hopefully it was either a full-back or a pacey new attacker as that would be fantastic news. Rafa Benitez is no doubt constantly sweating over now having a top quality left-back to be back-up to Paul Dummett and also no doubt aware that if first-choice right-back DeAndre Yedlin gets injured, then it will hurt his side greatly. Then again perhaps Magpies supporters won’t get too excited about just a scout being in an attendance as they still won’t have confidence that Mike Ashley is about to splash enough cash that would see a worthwhile signing made.
