Newcastle United are in talks with AS Monaco over a last-minute deal for defender Jorge, according to Le 10 Sport.

The French outlet claims that the Magpies are in advanced discussions with the Ligue 1 club over a deal for the Brazilian.

The report reveals that any deal for the left-back is likely to be complicated and no agreement has yet been reached between the two clubs with just hours of the English transfer window remaining.

The 22-year-old has made 32 appearances for the French side, scoring twice and providing four assists.

OPINION

This is just who Newcastle need, but they have made their approach far too late and have no chance of doing this deal in time. The Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley has been so far reluctant to splash his cash in this summers transfer window and even with the deadline just hours away, it looks like that will still be the case. These reported approaches should have happened months ago, they should be planning who they want to be signing months in advance and have plans in place if these go wrong, with back up options and fall back plans should the moves not come to fruition. It seems that the Magpies have a scattergun approach to transfers that clearly hasn’t worked in this window and that needs to change if the club wants to be more successful in the years to come. However, with Mike Ashley remaining in charge, that’s very unlikely to happen.
