The recent injury to full-back DeAndre Yedlin has undoubtedly left Newcastle United boss Rafa Benitez in a bit of a defensive predicament.

He has limited cover in Yedlin’s position, and it has now dawned that he must look to the less-experienced players to deputise in his absence against Cardiff City this weekend.

He should look no further than Callum Roberts.

The 21-year-old is determined to push his way into Benitez’ plans after netting his first goal for the club’s under-23 side, according to the Chronicle.

During pre-season, Roberts made five first team appearances, indicating he is ready to step up to the senior team now Yedlin is sidelined.

The youngster filled in at full-back during pre-season, demonstrating in the process what an assured and composed player he is.

Roberts usually plays in his preferred position as a winger, but was able to cope with the added pressure of operating at the back instead, which he coped with excellently.

The fact that he was able to adapt to playing in another role is why Benitez should be focusing his attention on him in midst of his injury woes.

He may not have Premier League experience, but his performance for the under-23 side in their 1-1 draw with their West Brom counterparts on Monday evening has obviously come at the right time for the Toon manager.

Not enough players are making the transition from the youth system into the first team, and this is the perfect opportunity for that to happen.

He obviously needs the motivation to continue his best form if he is to cut it in the senior side, and Benitez must reward him for his pre-season hunger by handing him a chance this weekend.

It may be a risk, but it is one that the Spaniard must be willing to take.
