Newcastle United have agreed a £3.5million fee to sign Deportivo La Coruna defender Fabian Schar, according to the Mirror.

The newspaper report that the 26-year-old enforcer is set to arrive on Tyneside for a medical today (Wednesday) ahead of the move.

The Mirror claim that Chancel Mbemba’s move to Porto this week handed Rafa Benitez the funds required to sign Schar, with the 42-cap Switzerland international set to become their fourth signing of the summer.

Finally there is some more movement on the transfer front for Newcastle, who are desperate to bring in several more faces before deadline day on the 9th of August. The exit of Mbemba opened a spot for a new centre-back to be brought in, and Schar looks to be a brilliant signing for the Magpies. The 26-year-old has not quite lived up to expectations since his early days at Basel, but he remains a key part of the Swiss national side, and will no doubt be a solid player in black and white. The enforcer is strong in the tackle and decent in the air, while also being comfortable on the ball. He will join Kenedy, Martin Dubravka and Ki Sung-Yueng as Newcastle’s new signings this summer, with a couple of others to hopefully follow. The timing of this deal could not be better for the club, with the squad preparing to jet out to Portugal for a pre-season tour, which will allow Schar to embed himself into the squad properly before the start of the season.
