Newcastle United are now facing competition from Bordeaux for the signature of defender Diego Reyes, according to CalcioMercato.

The Italian outlet report that Newcastle are favourites for the Mexican free agent but adds that the French side has now entered the race.

The report reveals that the Ligue 1 side have opened talks with the player’s agent in the hope of securing a deal ahead of the Magpies.

The 25-year-old ex-Porto central defender made 24 appearances for the Portuguese club last season, scoring three goals.

Well, at least Newcastle are working on some kind of transfer business ahead of the new Premier League season, although a new central defender should not be the absolute priority. Yes, they need to replace theĀ departed Chancel Mbemba, but they need to look at improving their squad not simply just replacing what has already left. What the Magpies really need is a statement signing, they need Mike Ashley to listen to the Toon fans and the club’s manager, and pull out all the stops in trying to secure a transfer that could shape their season. While that is looking extremely unlikely, that is exactly what they need and fans can hope something happens before the season starts. Signing a backup defender is not a signing that the Newcastle fans are going to get excited about, but it might be all they get this summer, such is the club’sĀ reluctance to spend serious cash.
