Newcastle United are in the hunt to sign Manchester City midfielder Oleksandr Zinchenko, according to a reliable journalist.

Freelance journalist Tim Nash who previously worked for the Express & Star covering Wolves shared via his Twitter account that the Magpies were interested in signing the 21-year-old.

Sky Sports previously claimed that Wolves had bid £16million for the 5ft 7in (Transfermarkt) Zinchenko but according to Nash’s update the player is still looking to talk to Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola before deciding his future.

OPINION

Zinchenko would be a fantastic signing for the Magpies to make as the player’s overall quality and versatility would instantly have a positive effect on the squad. The 21-year-old is naturally a central midfielder but can play in a range of positions that would see Rafa Benitez have a range of ways on how to use him. Zinchenko can play as a left-back, left-sided midfielder, right-sided midfielder and even operate as an attacking or defensive midfielder. The versatile ace would also be able to settle in quickly at St James Park and why he hasn’t heavily featured for Man City, he has been afforded some opportunities at the club. Zinchenko made 14 appearances for Guardiola’s side last season, with seven of them coming in the Premier League so he knows the standard that is expected of him in England’s top-flight. The only issue with the Magpies being in the hunt for the 21-year-old is that they have to see off Wolves for his signature and it seems the Premier League new boys are already willing to splash the cash in an attempt to get him. The player himself may be open to move as after his side won the Premier League title last season, he won’t get as many first-team opportunities as he would surely desire.
