Newcastle United are close to agreeing a season-long loan for Lille midfielder Thiago Maia with an option to make the deal permanent next summer, according to Le 10 Sport.

The French outlet report that an agreement is imminent between the two clubs which would give Newcastle the option to buy the 21-year-old Brazilian for a club-record £22million next year.

Le 10 Sport claim that Lille are looking to strike a deal in the hope that they will receive the touted £22million next summer, with the Ligue 1 club finding themselves in financial difficulty in recent seasons.

OPINION

Newcastle were linked with Maia earlier in the window and a permanent move was seemingly ruled out for the talented Brazilian, with funds low at St. James’ Park. A loan deal was never seemingly on the table for Maia, but the two sides are said to be close on a deal which would be a huge coup for the Magpies as we approach deadline day. Benitez has been known to be looking for a new midfielder, and Maia fits the bill perfectly. The Brazilian is good both going forward and tracking back, and should provide some brilliant cover for Jonjo Shelvey and Mo Diame in the centre of the park. The terms of the deal, which will give Newcastle the option to buy Maia next summer, are also ideal. This will give Benitez a full season to assess the youngster and his progress, and make an informed decision on whether he is worth the money.
