Newcastle striker Aleksandar Mitrovic is to undergo a medical at Fulham in the next 48 hours, according to Sky Sports.

The sports broadcaster report in their live blog [1.27pm] that the 6″2 (source: Transfermarkt) frontman is in London to complete his imminent move to the Cottagers after he departed the Magpies’ training camp in Porto on Saturday night (28 July).

The two Premier League rivals have agreed a price of £22 million rising to £27 million for the Serbian forward, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Craven Cottage and helped them achieve promotion via the play-offs.

OPINION

This is news that will undoubtedly delight Fulham fans after his loan spell there. As for Newcastle, the £27 million they are to recieve in return for the 22-year-old’s services will be hugely beneficial to them, and will allow boss Rafa Benitez to invest more money in the squad after getting hardly any financial backing from owner Mike Ashley. The loss of Mitrovic is not huge seeming as United have already signed Yoshinori Muto and are likely to move for another striker soon, with Salomon Rondon one of Benitez’ prime transfer targets. The club could only sell before they could buy, and Mitrovic moving to Fulham has done the Toon a huge favour, as it means Benitez can go in to the market more confident of landing his targets with more cash in his pocket. Now he needs to make the most of the money he will get and invest it wisely, otherwise he risks guiding the team down the league.
