Sean Longstaff’s proposed loan move to Portsmouth has been postponed after an impressive start to pre-season, according to a reliable journalist.

Lee Ryder, from the Chronicle, made the claim on his personal Twitter page on Wednesday night, although it seems that nothing has been decided finally yet.

He added that while Longstaff will remain with the first team for now, the situation will be reviewed in two weeks’ time.

The Chronicle had previously reported that the talented young midfielder, who’s still only 20, would head out on loan again this summer after a successful stint last season at Blackpool.

OPINION

Longstaff played brilliantly in the pre-season friendly against St Patrick’s Athletic earlier this week, scoring a goal and seemingly playing himself into contention for the Newcastle first-team this season. Benitez needs goals and Longstaff scored nine last season for Blackpool from a combination of central midfield, attacking midfield and secondary striker positions. He proved that he’s still got his shooting boots on and has caught Benitez’s attention and it looks like Portsmouth could miss out if Longstaff can kick on in pre-season. He’s got two weeks to prove that he deserves at least a place on the bench for Newcastle next season, and fans would love to see him rewarded for his efforts after coming up through the youth ranks. Newcastle play Hull next Tuesday and then Porto the following Saturday and Longstaff will know that more goals could convince Benitez that his future lies in the north east and now down on the south coast.
