Newcastle United forward Ayoze Perez has aimed a dig at a senior Toon player’s expense on Twitter.

The Spaniard called out Magpies goalkeeper Rob Elliot on his personal Twitter account for failing to stop his wonder-goal in training.

“When you gotta find new ways to score… Does it counts for the goal of the season contest? Rob Elliot, next time maybe you can save it,” he said.

Elliot, 32, has been at St. James Park since joining from Charlton in 2011 and made 16 Premier League appearances last season.

Newcastle fans will be hoping to see Ayoze Perez score goals like that in a competitive game next season, not just in training. The 24-year-old has lots of ability and is capable of a lot more than he’s producing. Maybe he’s falling victim of Rafael Benitez’s cautious style of play, as the strikers don’t see a lot of the ball in his system, but you would think someone of his talent would score more than 10 goals in all competitions last season. Meanwhile, goalkeeper Rob Elliot was usurped by loan signing Martin Dubravka towards the end of last season, after the Slovakian produced some outstanding saves to win The Magpies some vital points in their quest to avoid relegation last season. After the 29-year-old signed a permanent deal with the club this summer, it looks like Elliot will play second-fiddle once again this season, but may still be important if anything happens to Dubravka.
