Newcastle United are interested in signing Liverpool forward Divock Origi on a permanent deal, according to a trusted Twitter source.

As reported Anfield HQ journalist Oliver Bond on his personal Twitter account, the Magpies are keen to sign Origi on a permanent deal.

As reported by The Northern Echo, the Belgian is rated at £20million by Premier League giants Liverpool.

Rafael Benitez is keen to improve his side’s strikeforce this season after scoring only 37 league goals in the last Premier League campaign.

Although they achieved an impressive 10th placed finish in the league table last season, their top scorer Ayoze Perez scored just 10 goals in all competitions last season.

OPINION

Newcastle fans will be glad to see them being linked with a major permanent signing after the club have spent very little in the transfer window thus far. The signings of Martin Dubravka, Ki Sung-yueng and Kenedy have cost the club just £3.6million, with fans eager to see money being splashed on high-quality arrivals. This report may signal a change of tact from Toon owner Mike Ashley, maybe they are close to the sales of a few first-team players, or maybe he’s finally dipping his hand into his pocket. Whatever the reason, boss Rafael Benitez will be hoping to strengthen his squad significantly before the transfer window closes. If the Spaniard is restricted to cheap buys, free transfers and loan signings as his only options this summer, they won’t do any better than they did last year and they might even do worse if their rivals strengthen. It’s easy to see why Toon fans get so frustrated.
