Newcastle United are interested in a return for Crystal Palace winger Andros Townsend, according to the South London Press.

The regional newspaper report that the Magpies are keen on a deal which would take the 26-year-old dazzler back to Tyneside just two years after he left following their relegation from the Premier League.

Townsend only joined the club in January of 2016 for around £15million from Tottenham, before Palace then activated a £15million clause in his contract following relegation and he left just six months after arriving.

Townsend made 13 appearances for the Magpies, scoring four goals and registering two assists.

Good move for Newcastle United?

Not particularly.

Townsend is a solid player, and always manages to chip in – the winger had two goals and nine assists in all competitions in 2017/18 – but is he the calibre of player Newcastle should be chasing?

The Magpies need quality players who are going to instantly improve their squad, and there would be doubt over whether Townsend would do that.

There is also the issue of his move to Palace, with fans unhappy with his decision to leave just six months after arriving at St. James’ Park.

Nothing but Newcastle rating: 3/10

Likely to happen?

The report merely claims that Newcastle are interested in a deal, with no further information.

It would seem a strange move for Rafa Benitez to make this summer, with a winger not exactly what the club need, and therefore you would think that this is an unlikely one.

Townsend would also likely cost more than the £15million the club recouped for him in 2016, and that would mean a deal is far from worth it for the Magpies.
