Newcastle United have made initial enquiries about the availability of Borussia Dortmund star Mario Gotze, according to the Mirror.

The newspaper report that the 26-year-old World Cup winner is eyeing a move to the Premier League in a bid to reignite his career, with five top-flight clubs now monitoring the situation.

The Mirror claim that Newcastle have made ‘tentative’ enquiries about the midfield maestro, with Dortmund seeking a fee of around £18million this summer, which would make Gotze the club’s new record transfer.

Dortmund finished fourth in 2017/18 to qualify for the Champions League next season.

Good move for Newcastle United?

Absolutely.

Gotze has had a tough few years, with his time at Bayern Munich not going to plan after being left to rot on the bench, while also being diagnosed with a metabolic disorder upon his return to Dortmund, but he is still a quality player.

This is the man who has been touted as one of Germany’s best ever young talents, and while he is now further down the line in his career, there is something to say for that.

A move for Gotze at £18million is also an absolute snip, and one that Newcastle should seriously look in to this summer if they want to take themselves to the next level.

Likely to happen?

Gotze is reportedly seeking a move to the Premier League, and that will most definitely play into Newcastle’s hands.

Depending on which clubs actually make a move for the Germany international, Newcastle could find themselves as an attractive option for the 26-year-old.

If they do end up making a move for him, then there is nothing to suggest that the Magpies could not snap him up, but we will have to wait and see if that happens.

Mike Ashley is still looking extremely reluctant to spend money, and the owner would have to sign off on a deal worth £18million before the club can make such a move.
