Newcastle United left-back Massadio Haidara has agreed terms on a two-year deal with Ligue 2 side Lens, according to Foot365

The French football website report that Haidara will join Lens on a free transfer when his contract with Newcastle ends this month, with the club having the option of an extra year in the deal.

Foot365 claim that the switch should be finalised very soon, bringing an end to Haidara’s ill-fated five year spell at St. James’ Park.

Good move for Newcastle United?

Yes.

The club were always going to let Haidara leave for free this summer after an injury-plagued five years on Tyneside, and an exit is the right decision for all parties.

It is a massive shame that Haidara’s time at the club turned out so poorly, with the French flyer showing glimpses of real quality before an injury derailed his time in England.

His power was another big asset in the Premier League, and had he had sustained that injury then who know what would have happened, but for now an exit is the best move for everyone.

Likely to happen?

It looks like this one is all but sealed.

In many ways it is a surprise to see Haidara agree a deal to drop into Ligue 2, with a deal to take him to St-Etienne coming close to completion last year.

Lens will however be well in contention for promotion next season, and hopefully this is the fresh start that Haidara desperately needs.
